The time capsule will include significant items such as a pocket Constitution signed by Supreme Court Justices, a crystal from the 2026 New Year’s Eve ball drop, and an NFL/America250 coin.
The time capsule is a stainless steel, 900-pound waterproof vessel. It contains nearly 200 contributions from across the United States. These contributions capture both civic records and cultural memorabilia. Rosie Rios, Chair of America250, emphasized the importance of representing all branches of government in the capsule, as well as including all 50 states, D.C., and the five territories.
The vessel, with its 1,100-pound lid, will weigh about a ton when buried at Independence National Historical Park. It will safeguard a collection meant to reflect American life during the 250th anniversary of the nation. The capsule is scheduled to be unearthed in 2276.
Philadelphia, often called the City of Brotherly Love, was chosen as the site for the capsule due to its historical significance as the birthplace of the United States. Rosie Rios called it the natural choice for this milestone event.
Alongside the pocket Constitution, the capsule includes a range of artifacts such as a message in a bottle from Coca-Cola, an American flag flown at the 2026 Rose Parade, and a message from the NFL captured in a commemorative coin. These items represent the nation’s history, culture, and identity.
A capstone and some artifacts will be displayed in Philadelphia, serving as a reminder of the history encased for future generations. Rosie Rios expressed hope that descendants will appreciate these treasures in the future.
