Aidan O’Connell Mourns Father’s Passing, Sits Out Game Against Saints

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell did not play in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Earlier in the week, he announced the death of his father. O’Connell shared a photo on Instagram with his parents before deactivating his account.

He expressed immense sorrow, writing, “It is with immense sadness that I share the passing of my Dad, Jim. My Dad was a gift to me and to so many others. All who were fortunate enough to know him can testify to the great man he was. He impacted countless lives, and those who knew him were better for it.” O’Connell thanked those who offered prayers and support. He said his family is seeking comfort in their faith and remembering the positive impact his father had.

O’Connell reflected on the Heidelberg Catechism, stating that his comfort in life and death lies in his faith, quoting, “My only comfort in life and death is that I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.” He expressed deep love and loss, writing, “Rest in peace, Dad. We love you and will miss you more than words can say.”

O’Connell joined the Raiders in the 2023 draft. In his time with the team, he has accumulated 3,932 yards and 20 touchdowns over 21 games. This season, he stands in the QB3 position due to acquisitions including Kirk Cousins and number one draft pick Fernando Mendoza.
