Accountability Calls for Trump’s Political Deceptions Amidst Midterms

Donald Trump has excelled at persuading many voters by making lofty promises and claims throughout his political career. However, with early voting underway for the midterms, the public is becoming aware of his frequent dishonesty. U.S. citizens are increasingly recognizing Trump’s tariffs and a prolonged military conflict with Iran are influencing higher prices for essential goods.

According to an Associated Press-NORC Center survey from October 1, 71% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the conflict. Additionally, 65% blame his policies for contributing to the growing affordability crisis. An average of polls from the New York Times shows less than 40% of voters approve of his performance in office. Yet, Trump denies these evaluations, attributing any negative perceptions to poor public relations rather than his leadership.

Trump’s dismissive response to a journalist questioning his low polls highlights his habitual denouncement of unfavorable data. While polls occasionally err, credible pollsters adhere strictly to accuracy norms to avoid damaging their reputation.

Trump’s persistent labeling of critical reports and lost elections as ‘fake news’ starkly contrasts with the factuality presented by diligent fact-checkers. CNN’s Daniel Dale documented over 8,500 false assertions by Trump since 2016. The Washington Post corroborated this with findings of 30,573 misleading statements during Trump’s initial term, peaking at 503 instances in a single day before the 2020 election.

Despite his dubious track record, Trump remains confident in his campaign assertions for the 2024 election. These promises range from halved home costs to drastically reduced gasoline prices, and unfounded claims to resolve international conflicts swiftly. An Economist-YouGov poll found skeptics among voters, with only 21% believing he would fulfill his pledge to give $5,000 to every adult citizen if the Republican Party maintained legislative control.

Many Americans suffer from Trump’s imposed war with Iran, tariffs, budget cuts to vital services, and employment disruptions caused by strict immigration enforcement. These actions, alongside attempts to deter voting rights and press freedom, question Trump’s leadership efficacy.

Amidst the midterm elections, Trump urges voters to ‘pretend I’m on the ballot,’ encouraging Democrats to counter by reflecting on his ineffective policies. If Democrats secure congressional control, it marks a pivotal opportunity to hold Trump accountable for his transgressions.

An A. Scott Bolden perspective, attorney, NewsNation contributor, and former Democratic Party official, underscores the importance of addressing Trump’s controversial rule. This action could signify a turning point if Democrats gain legislative power.
