Aaron Donald has come out of retirement to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams, concluding a 2 1/2-year break to partner with Myles Garrett on the team’s defensive front. The Rams made this announcement on Sunday, following extensive discussions, preparations, and workouts for the notable defensive lineman.
During his first decade with the Rams, across St. Louis and Los Angeles, Donald established himself as one of the premier defensive players. He received the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award three times, was selected to 10 Pro Bowls, earned eight All-Pro designations, and secured a Super Bowl victory before his unexpected retirement in March 2024.
After spending two years in retirement with his family, Donald began considering a return, particularly after the Rams traded for Garrett. Garrett, a standout in his own right, significantly contributes to the defensive prowess that Donald brings. Together, they hold five of the past nine AP Defensive Player of the Year awards, with Garrett earning two of the recent three while playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Donald’s comeback fortifies the Rams’ already strong roster as they aim for a second NFL championship under head coach Sean McVay. To support this goal, the team has also acquired cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson from Kansas City, further enhancing a defense prepared to match last season’s top-ranked offense led by league MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford.
By resuming play, Donald resets the timeline for his anticipated induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, his primary goal is to seize the opportunity of winning another championship alongside Garrett and promising teammates like Byron Young, Kobie Turner, and Braden Fiske, forming a potentially formidable defensive lineup.
Originally set for eligibility in the 2029 Hall of Fame class, Donald is focused on the present challenge and chance to contribute to the Rams’ pursuit of excellence.
