Craig Counsell remained composed when questioned about Pete Crow-Armstrong’s role as the leadoff hitter for the Chicago Cubs. When asked if Crow-Armstrong would maintain this position for the remainder of the season, Counsell simply responded, “I think he’ll be there tonight.”
Counsell avoided speculating about long-term lineup decisions, emphasizing that they don’t need to finalize lineups weeks in advance. He complimented Crow-Armstrong’s performance, noting, “I think he’s done a nice job since he’s been there,” despite hitting only .190 over six games.
Crow-Armstrong’s .357 on-base percentage, backed by five walks, showed promise amid the team’s struggles.
The Cubs experimented with the lineup to shake off a rough 10-game losing streak. After winning the final two games against Pittsburgh, Counsell’s lineup changes seemed effective. The following series against the Cardinals drew national attention, underscoring the pressure on the team.
Counsell acknowledged fan scrutiny and criticism, which is typical during challenging times. Addressing his approach, he said, “We have to find the good things that come out of struggles and challenges.”
Despite the pressure, Counsell remains secure in his position, with support from Jed Hoyer, the club’s president. His players have also shown loyalty, recognizing that it is ultimately the players, not just the manager, affecting game outcomes.
Reflecting on the difficulties, Counsell mentioned the team’s missing pitchers, Cade Horton, Edward Cabrera, and Matthew Boyd, as significant factors. “We’re missing Starter 1, Starter 2, Starter 4,” Counsell commented, acknowledging the challenges this presents.
In the series against Milwaukee, Counsell’s mentor, Pat Murphy, shared advice about managing personal expectations, a sentiment Counsell echoed, as he continuously evaluates his strategies.
Going forward, the Cubs aim to demonstrate that their impressive 20-3 run reflects their true capability more than their recent struggles. With key players on the verge of returning, Counsell remains focused on steering the team back on track.
