Advocating for Inclusivity
Amelia Burbank, a 10-year-old student at Schilling Elementary School in Homer Glen, is dedicated to making playgrounds more accessible for children with disabilities. Her goal is to ensure that all children, including those in wheelchairs, can participate in recess with their peers.
Fundraising Efforts
Amelia’s mission led her to organize Amelia’s Act of Kindness Yard Sale at Heritage Park. Her family also collaborated with Homer Glen’s Ability Awareness Committee and engaged in fundraising activities at HomerFest, which included managing a dunk tank and beer tent. With assistance from her relative’s radio promotions in Arizona, donations poured in from multiple states, totaling over $11,000.
Community Support
The timing of Amelia’s contributions coincided perfectly with Homer Elementary School District 33C’s project to replace playground mulch with wheelchair-accessible turf. Schilling’s Parent-Teacher Organization raised $25,000, assisting the initiative. Principal Candis Gasa acknowledged Amelia’s efforts by presenting her a heart-shaped wand, symbolizing her transformative impact.
Playground Improvements
Playground renovations cost over $250,000, supported by PTO and district funds alongside Amelia’s contributions. Improvements included enhanced drainage, turf installation, an accessible apron, a rock climbing structure, and musical instruments for sensory experiences. A Gaga Ball Pit, funded by Amelia, offers inclusive play for various skill levels, promoting equity in the playspace.
Continued Advocacy
Amelia’s peers, Georgia McGoldrick and Kinsey Hellmuth, participated in fundraising and are motivated to further inclusivity efforts. District 33C board member Melissa Chandarana recognized the significance of accessible playgrounds. The Ability Awareness Committee’s co-chair, Karen R. Adamczyk, praised Amelia’s presentations and enthusiasm, highlighting the positive impact on students with special needs.
Creating Bonds
Accessible playgrounds offer children, like Nolan Bos, opportunities to bond with peers. Amelia’s considerations for children with developmental delays have been commended. Principal Gasa emphasizes community and unity, teaching students to be compassionate citizens.
