Spurs Level Western Conference Finals With Commanding Win

The San Antonio Spurs leveled the Western Conference Finals by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-82 on Sunday night. With both teams securing two wins each, Game 5 at Paycor Center in Oklahoma City becomes crucial in determining which team gains the advantage before a decisive Game 6.

Game Highlights

A key factor in this game was the Thunder’s drop in 3-point shooting accuracy. Previously, in Game 3, they had excelled with a 44.7% success rate. However, the Spurs’ defensive adjustments in Game 4 limited the Thunder to just 6 of 33 from 3-point range, a mere 18% accuracy. As a result, their overall field goal percentage fell to 33%.

Although the Spurs did not significantly outperform from beyond the arc, hitting only 27% of their attempts, they remained aggressive and took advantage of free throw opportunities. They attempted 32 free throws, in contrast to the Thunder’s 18.

Strong Opening Performance

San Antonio’s tenacity was evident from the onset. They established a nine-point lead after the first quarter and extended it to double digits by halftime, much to the delight of their home crowd. The Thunder struggled in the third quarter as turnovers hampered their performance, a situation the Spurs have routinely exploited throughout the season.

The Spurs capitalized on the Thunder’s 20 turnovers, scoring 25 points directly from them. Additionally, they found success in fast-break scenarios. At one stage, they led by as much as 25 points, allowing them to rest key players in the final quarter confidently.

Key Player Contributions

Victor Wembanyama had an impressive night, leading with 33 points on 11 of 22 shooting, including three 3-pointers. He also gathered eight rebounds and provided five assists, alongside three blocks. His teammates Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and De’Aaron Fox supported him well, contributing essential points and assists.

The Spurs’ bench was also active, with six players scoring, notably Dylan Harper, who had seven points and five rebounds.

In contrast, the Thunder’s performance was less efficient. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled, making only six of his 15 shots but managed all seven of his free throws. The supporting players, Aaron Wiggins and Jared McCain, together made just three of 21 attempts.
