Vehicle Collision with Elephant in Uganda’s National Park

Three individuals lost their lives and four others sustained injuries when their vehicle collided with an elephant in a northwestern Uganda national park. The local police reported this tragic incident on Monday, but information regarding the elephant’s condition remains undisclosed.

Human-wildlife interactions have become more frequent recently, as human populations expand into areas designated for wildlife protection. This particular accident occurred on a Sunday evening within Murchison Falls National Park. A Toyota Hiace minibus traveling from Arua city to Kampala struck an elephant crossing the roadway, resulting in the vehicle losing control.

The crash led to the immediate death of three occupants, with four individuals, including the driver, suffering injuries. Images of the accident showed the vehicle overturned at the roadside. Seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority were aboard the minibus at the time of the collision.

The Uganda Police Force released a statement, emphasizing the importance of drivers exercising extreme caution within national parks and protected wildlife areas, particularly during night hours. They urged motorists to strictly adhere to speed limits to prevent such unfortunate events.

The Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) also confirmed the incident, reiterating advice for cautious driving through protected zones due to frequent animal crossings. In 2024, UWA estimated that speeding vehicles claimed the lives of approximately three animals daily within Murchison Falls National Park.

Vehicle accidents occur frequently in East Africa. In a separate incident last December, a high-speed passenger train in India collided with a crossing herd, resulting in the deaths of seven elephants and injuries to a calf.
