The Memorial Day weekend saw the travel baseball community facing turmoil due to a controversial incident at a youth tournament. Reports emerged that an 11U baseball coach from Oklahoma allegedly instructed his pitcher to hit a player on the opposing team. The situation escalated further with claims of a fastball aimed at a dugout during a Kansas City USSSA tournament.
According to a coach from Nebraska, Brandon Magni, tensions flared when his team was targeted. Magni shared on his personal Facebook account that during a game against the Oklahoma Eleven, a pitcher was allegedly ordered by coach Mychal Ryals to aim at one of his players. Magni stated, “Today all of my boys learned a life lesson. While Easton was up to bat, the coach told their pitcher to throw at his head. As Easton informed the umpire, the coach redirected to aim at our dugout instead, resulting in a 70mph fastball striking one of my players.”
The incident drew attention on social media, leading to heated discussions regarding sportsmanship and youth sports culture. Despite the severity of the allegations, it’s unclear if the pitcher was explicitly instructed or acted independently. Notably, after being removed from the game, the pitcher remained in the dugout, and the coach was not expelled from the venue.
“DO BETTER USSSA BASEBALL!!!! At the end of the game, we shook their hands and were the better men/boys. The boys learned you can’t control what others do to you, but you can control your response. Ours was to use this as motivation and close out the game,” Magni concluded on social media.
The situation took a curious turn when Magni claimed that after advocating for a forfeit against the Oklahoma team, he was presented with unusual options. He mentions being told that his team could forfeit, or alternatively, that he might “call the police.” This response adds another layer of complexity to the already contentious situation.
As the story develops, questions remain about the circumstances leading to the incident. A mother of one of the Nebraska players expressed her dismay on Instagram, noting that the team was enthusiastic and competitive, but did not anticipate such a dramatic escalation.
