Making your debut in Major League Baseball is challenging, but doing so while attempting to maintain a no-hitter adds unique pressure. Alimber Santa, a pitcher for the Houston Astros, faced this situation during his debut in a 9-0 victory against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
Tatsuya Imai had already delivered six innings without allowing a hit, while Steven Okert contributed one inning before manager Joe Espada called on Santa to complete the task. The 23-year-old showcased remarkable composure, pitching two flawless innings. He concluded the game by striking out Brandon Nimmo, marking his first Major League strikeout and sealing the combined no-hitter.
Remarkably, Santa achieved a rare feat by becoming the first pitcher since 1900 to participate in a no-hitter during his MLB debut, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
Yeah, there was some adrenaline,
Santa expressed this through a translator, acknowledging the high stakes while trying to stay calm in the bullpen.
Manager Joe Espada praised Santa’s performance, stating, Proud of Santa. I think it’s a big night for him and his family. So proud of him. I’ve seen this kid for years, and just to have this moment is huge for the organization and for him.
Imai initially faced a challenge, walking three batters, yet he managed to recover. Okert also issued one walk during his time on the mound. Despite these factors, the Astros secured their 17th regular-season no-hitter, with 18 in total if postseason games are included. The team achieved a similar feat against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 World Series.
The last no-hitter in the major leagues occurred when Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers secured a 12-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 4, 2024. No pitcher has pitched a complete-game no-hitter since Blake Snell did so for the San Francisco Giants against the Cincinnati Reds on August 2, 2024.
Ronel Blanco pitched the Astros’ previous no-hitter, resulting in a 10-0 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays on April 1, 2024, marking Espada’s first win as the team’s manager. Houston has been responsible for three of the last seven and five of the last 11 no-hitters in Major League Baseball.
The Astros, with a record of 24-31, aim to maintain momentum from the combined no-hitter as they face the Rangers, currently at 24-29, in the second of a four-game series on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. ET.
