Controversy Surrounding New Jersey’s Delaney Hall Detention Facility

Political Leaders Demand Closure of Detention Center

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and Senator Andy Kim have met with families of detainees held at Delaney Hall detention facility. Critics urge the shutdown of this center due to reported “unacceptable” conditions. The facility is currently facing a hunger strike, prompting Sherrill and Kim to request access to the center.

Demand for Access and Immediate Action

Kim posted on social media stating: “I’m back at Delaney Hall with @GovSherrillNJ and other members of the NJ delegation to meet with families of detainees and listen to community advocates. We’re working together to make sure they’re heard and speak out with them. Delaney Hall must be shut down immediately.”

Both leaders align with community advocates demanding a halt to ICE’s operations at Delaney Hall in Newark. Allegations include poor living conditions for illegal immigrants housed within.

Protests and Clashes Outside Delaney Hall

On Sunday, disruptions outside the privately operated facility, which became an immigration detention center last year, escalated as protesters confronted authorities. Reports indicate a hunger strike among some detainees protesting alleged poor conditions.

Governor Sherrill expressed grave concerns about Delaney Hall’s conditions. Always a proponent against private detention centers, she desires immediate closure of Delaney Hall following these reports.

Denied Entry and Continued Advocacy

Congressman Kim and Representative Rob Menendez attempted entry on Sunday but faced denial. Criticism from facility opponents points to detainee maltreatment and inadequate conditions.

“In sum, Delaney Hall is dangerous for those being detained, their loved ones, and all who care about immigrants’ rights, fundamental constitutional freedoms, and democracy,” the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey stated in February.

DHS Response on Detainee Care Standards

According to DHS, detainees receive three meals a day, access to clean water, clothing, and toiletries. DHS noted ICE’s higher standards compared to most U.S. prisons.

ICE ensures comprehensive medical care, including dental and mental health services, access to appointments, and emergency care. DHS claimed many detainees receive superior healthcare than previously accessed.

Tensions Escalate Outside Facility

In May 2025, protests escalated ending in a clash involving congressional members and the Newark Mayor, Ras Baraka. Allegations emerged of rushing past security gates opened for an ICE bus.

Representative LaMonica McIver faces federal indictment for allegedly assaulting and impeding federal officers amid concerns for detainee safety. Former Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin raised concerns describing some detainees as “murderers, terrorists, child rapists, and MS-13 gang members.”
