Wisconsin Gubernatorial Candidate’s Bold Stance: Francesca Hong’s Police Reform Proposals

Francesca Hong, a Democratic socialist vying for the governorship in Wisconsin, has gained attention for her strong views on policing. Hong famously advocated for defunding and abolishing the police in social media posts following the deaths of George Floyd and Jacob Blake. Her stance stirred significant debate during her tenure as a state representative.

In August 2020, CNN reported a post from Hong stating, “I support defunding the police as a first step towards abolishing the police.” This sentiment came in the aftermath of the shooting of Jacob Blake, who was left partially paralyzed following an encounter with police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Blake was allegedly holding a pocket knife when he was shot, which led to a series of protests.

Hong’s controversial remarks extended into her time as an elected official. On social media, she questioned the use of force by police against Blake, posting, “How is 7 bullets in the back not excessive force.” Her statement claimed that the presence of police was tied to upholding white supremacy, and urged for reforms that go beyond simple measures.

“Defund then abolish. Reform can’t be an option,” Hong asserted.

However, in a recent statement to Fox News Digital, Hong seemed to modify her stance, expressing no desire to cut public safety funding. She stressed the need for comprehensive solutions to promote safety across Wisconsin, emphasizing housing, employment, mental health support, and community resources.

Hong has received endorsements from prominent Democratic figures like Representatives Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna. With the Democratic primary set for August 11, Hong faces intense competition from a field that includes Mandela Barnes, the former Lieutenant Governor and Democratic Senate nominee in 2022.

Republican candidate Rep. Tom Tiffany, known for his affiliation with the House Freedom Caucus, criticized both Hong and Barnes, describing them as far-left radicals. Tiffany suggested that the current Democrat Party prioritizes criminals over victims, highlighting past assertions by Barnes to significantly reduce prison populations and eliminate cash bail.

As the race unfolds, candidates are vying to address critical issues of public safety, criminal justice, and resource allocation amidst a broader national conversation.
