A Nebraska woman has been charged with felony theft after allegedly exploiting a gas station rewards card glitch, enabling her to receive free gas. The 45-year-old was arrested on March 6, and prosecutors claim her actions cost Bosselman Enterprises’ Pump & Pantry in Lincoln nearly $28,000.
Details of the Exploit
Prosecutors allege the woman double-swiped the rewards card, triggering a software glitch that allowed the gas pump to enter demonstration mode. This mode enabled users to pump gas without paying. The software, updated in November 2022, inadvertently included this flaw.
The woman reportedly exploited the glitch from November 2022 until June 1, 2023, when it was fixed. During this period, she was able to pump more than 7,400 gallons of free gas over 510 separate uses of the card.
Broader Implications
A loss-prevention manager at the company discovered the issue in October and traced the frequent use of one card to the suspect. Video surveillance confirmed her involvement, showing her at the pump during various occasions.
Authorities clarified that the woman also allowed another individual to use her card for a fee. Reports indicate that this second woman paid $500 for fuel that should have cost approximately $700.
Legal Proceedings
The accused is currently free on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 11. Attempts to reach her attorney for comment were made, but no statement has been provided.
