The Secret Service communicated via X about their awareness of the gunfire reports near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. They are actively working to confirm details with agents on-site.
Around 6:04 p.m., an NBC News team present heard between 20 to 30 gunshots. Secret Service agents quickly directed journalists outside on the North Lawn to seek safety inside the press briefing room, while armed agents secured the perimeter.
By 6:46 p.m., the lockdown affecting the White House grounds concluded. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on X that the FBI is involved and assisting the Secret Service.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the incident. Vice President JD Vance had been at the White House earlier, but his location at the time of the incident is unconfirmed. The U.S. Capitol Police have not yet provided additional information.
