Emergency Shelters Open in Orange County
Authorities have set up several emergency shelters to assist residents evacuated due to a chemical leak incident in Garden Grove. As of Friday night, Kennedy High School in La Palma was added to the list. By Saturday morning, additional shelters included Ocean View High in Huntington Beach, Savanna High in Anaheim, and Freedom Hall in Fountain Valley.
The American Red Cross was managing the evacuation center at Kennedy High, where several dozen vehicles had gathered. Volunteers from different groups, including local police and grocery store employees, pitched in to assist evacuees.
Residents Frustrated with Information Gaps
“We got in here after midnight and didn’t settle until about 2 a.m.,” said Denise Guerrero, a local resident. “This is our sixth stop since evacuating.”
Denise Guerrero expressed dissatisfaction with the information flow from authorities. Many evacuees relied on their phones and each other for updates. Guerrero emphasized the importance of community communication as not all neighbors were signed up for emergency alerts.
Evacuees filled the gymnasium at Kennedy High as pastries and water were provided. Lt. Kory Ferrin of the Garden Grove Police confirmed that arrangements for food and medical supplies were well managed by the Red Cross.
Chemical Tank Stabilization Efforts
Firefighters were working to stabilize the compromised chemical tank, maintaining its internal temperature at approximately 90 degrees Celsius. The efforts to cool the tank involved an enhanced sprinkler system, though temperatures inside the tank continued to rise.
Officials identified two grim outcomes: either a massive explosion of the pressurized tank or a spill of 7,000 gallons of toxic methyl methacrylate. The crew faced challenges due to the tank’s valve system being clogged.
Uncertain Futures for Evacuees
Evacuees at Cypress Community Center were left in limbo as they searched for shelter. Many families, including those with pets, struggled to find pet-friendly accommodations. Sean Tufts shared the difficulty his family faced in finding a hotel that would accept their cats.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has officially declared a state of emergency in response to the crisis. The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is actively assisting local authorities with relief efforts.
Chronology of Events
The issue began Thursday at GKN Aerospace when a leak of methyl methacrylate was reported. This prompted initial evacuations. Safety systems failed to stabilize the tank, leading to expanded evacuation orders and the closure of schools in the area on Friday.
Authorities Urge for Caution
State Sen. Tom Umberg encouraged residents to evacuate immediately, emphasizing the risk. He assured them that expenses incurred due to evacuation would be addressed.
Company Response
GKN Aerospace acknowledged the situation and committed to working with emergency services. The company emphasized its concern for the safety of employees and nearby communities.
Safety and Health Concerns
Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong of Orange County warned about potential health risks if the chemical tank exploded, releasing toxic vapors.
Officials are monitoring the air quality around Garden Grove to ensure public safety. The public has been advised to follow evacuation guidelines and stay informed through official channels.
