RCR Temporarily Retires Kyle Busch’s No. 8, Plans Future for Brexton

Richard Childress Racing (RCR) will temporarily retire the No. 8 car, once driven by Kyle Busch. This decision allows time for his son, Brexton, to potentially take over one day. The team plans to use the No. 33 car at the Cup Series. The change begins Sunday at the Coca-Cola 600 after Busch’s sudden death. The cause is not yet public.

Austin Hill will fill Busch’s spot at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion, leaves a significant legacy in racing. Fans and the industry recognize the No. 8 car as a symbol of Kyle Busch’s achievements.

Brexton Busch, now 11, is active in racing. Last year, he won the Tulsa Shootout Jr. Sprint Championship, earning a Golden Driller. RCR stated, “No one can carry it forward to the level that he did. The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing.” Brexton began his career in 2020. He started at Millbridge Speedway in Beginner Box Stock division at age five. He secured his first win at Mountain Creek Speedway soon after.

In 2024, Brexton achieved 48 wins, 126 top-10s, and 107 top-5s across various race styles. His grandfather, Kyle, began a similar path. Following Dale Earnhardt’s 2001 crash, RCR switched from No. 3 to No. 29. The No. 3 returned in 2014 with Austin Dillon, Richard Childress’ grandson, behind the wheel.
