Trump’s Influence Evident in Louisiana Senate Race

President Donald Trump’s impact on Republican politics remains strong, according to Sen. John Kennedy from Louisiana. Kennedy highlighted Trump’s endorsement in a Louisiana Senate race, which played a role in unseating the incumbent, Sen. Bill Cassidy.

“Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable,” Kennedy stated on “The Sunday Briefing.” He explained that polls had shown Senator Cassidy struggling for over a year. The president’s endorsement of Congresswoman Julia Letlow added to this, marking the final blow. Kennedy acknowledged Cassidy’s decision to run, respecting his choice despite the challenges.

In the GOP primary on Saturday, Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming surpassed Cassidy, as reported by The Associated Press. Letlow secured approximately 45% of the vote, Fleming around 28%, while Cassidy trailed at just under 25%. Since no candidate received over 50% of the vote, Letlow and Fleming will face a runoff.

The winner of the Republican runoff will later compete against the Democratic runoff’s winner in November.

“When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, but you don’t pout, you don’t whine. You don’t claim the election was stolen… You don’t manufacture some excuse.”

Cassidy’s choice to convict Trump in the past has led to friction. As elections unfolded, Trump targeted Cassidy as disloyal and ineffectual for Louisiana. This criticism came before the primaries, where Cassidy attempted to reach supporters despite challenging circumstances.

Following Cassidy’s defeat, Trump expressed his satisfaction on social media, declaring Cassidy’s political career as over.

Cassidy, in his concession speech, subtly responded to Trump’s remarks. He emphasized accepting electoral outcomes with grace and acknowledged the privilege of serving voters during his tenure.

Sen. John Kennedy noted Trump’s endorsement as a major factor in voter decisions. However, he mentioned another issue – changes to the primary election format. Louisiana shifted from open to closed primaries, causing voter dissatisfaction. Many voters were unable to vote for their preferred candidates, leading to frustration.

While Trump’s endorsement significantly influenced the race, Kennedy recognized other elements contributing to Cassidy’s political difficulties.
