In a tragic incident in New Mexico, three individuals lost their lives, and nearly 20 first responders were hospitalized following exposure to an unknown substance. This occurred at a residence east of Albuquerque, as reported by state authorities.
Details of the Incident
State police informed Newsweek that four individuals were initially found unresponsive at the site. Out of these, one person survived and is currently receiving medical treatment. During the emergency response in Mountainair, 18 first responders experienced symptoms like nausea and dizziness after contact with the substance. They were taken to the hospital for monitoring, with two in serious condition. Hazmat teams are actively working to identify the substance, which is believed not to be airborne. Officials have assured the public that there is no widespread threat.
“At this time, we do not know the exact cause,”posted Peter Nieto, the mayor of Mountainair, on Facebook. He mentioned that narcotics might be involved.
Local Response and Investigation
New Mexico State Police were alerted to a possible overdose involving an unknown substance at 306 Hanlon Avenue, Mountainair. Along with Torrance County Sheriff’s Office deputies, officers discovered the four individuals unresponsive inside the home. Of those, three were pronounced dead, as confirmed by NMSP.
The emergency personnel exposed to the substance were taken to nearby hospitals. Officials emphasized there was no public threat, with Albuquerque Fire Rescue HazMat teams assisting to determine the substance’s nature. It is thought to be transmitted through contact rather than being airborne.
Mayor’s Statement on the Drug Issue
In his Facebook post, Mayor Peter Nieto addressed the community’s concerns, highlighting the town’s seriousness about combating drug issues.
“Our first responders, law enforcement, medical personnel, and local officials work daily to protect this community and handle challenging situations,” he wrote. He noted the widespread issue of addiction, stressing that change demands family support, accountability, education, and individual willingness to seek help.
Mayor Nieto urged residents to refrain from spreading rumors during the ongoing investigation. He also invited the community to propose solutions for addressing the broader drug problem, expressing openness to new ideas.
