The Villages, Fla. – The Villages, recognized as one of the largest retirement communities globally, has maintained a reputation as a conservative bastion. Historically, residents with left-leaning views often kept their political preferences private, concerned about social repercussions such as being excluded from community activities.
However, the emergence of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate has galvanized this minority community, fostering confidence and encouraging more open expression. Within the Villages Democratic Club, membership has surged to approximately 1,500, nearly doubling since the 2020 election, as reported by club president Diane Foley.
Diane Foley shared, “Democrats have typically remained quiet due to the overwhelming Republican presence.”
The community has witnessed parades of golf carts showcasing support for Harris, and a recent visit from Doug Emhoff further boosted morale. Residents displaying Harris support through apparel or lawn signs reported relief from fellow Democrats, confirming they were not alone.
While many still choose to avoid political discourse publicly to maintain neighborly relations, some, like Howard Underwood, have shifted from long-standing Republican affiliations due to changes in political dynamics. Underwood, now an independent, participates in Democratic activities without fully aligning with all of Harris’s policies.
Howard Underwood stated, “We’ve allied with Democrats despite differing views because the alternative is unthinkable.”
Embracing humor, Glen and Suzi Smith, members of the Villages Democratic Club, enjoy activities like pickleball within the vibrant environment. Although friends questioned their choice to move to a conservative stronghold, they believe in positive infiltration.
Glen Smith commented, “We know our friends are conservative, and they know we’re liberal, so we agree not to discuss it.”
Meanwhile, residents like Dave Farraday focus on community over politics, enjoying retirement and fostering neighborly connections across political divides.
Dave Farraday expressed, “We’re here to relax and enjoy retirement.”
The evolving political atmosphere is evident, as more Democrats and independents openly support Harris. Large gatherings at Democrats Club meetings and golf cart parades signify this shift. Members like Shelly Newman encourage vocal support rather than whispers among Democrats.
Shelly Newman urged, “Democrats should be loud and proud.”
Campaign events feature signs linking Harris with figures like Obama and Biden, underscoring a sense of collective Democratic identity. Despite challenges, the Villages Democratic Club continues to grow in influence, motivated by recent political climates.
