Cam Skattebo has consistently demonstrated his physical running style in his early NFL career with the New York Giants, often delivering powerful hits to his opponents. During Sunday’s victory over the Houston Texans, Skattebo faced a penalty for unnecessary roughness after a forceful collision with safety M.J. Stewart. Officials believed Skattebo had crossed the line by leading with the crown of his helmet.
Skattebo disagreed with the call, expressing his frustration alongside head coach John Harbaugh, who supported his running back. Harbaugh had to restrain Skattebo on the sideline before showing his own dissatisfaction with the penalty.
In the game, Skattebo played a crucial role with a pivotal 42-yard run in overtime, setting the stage for Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown that secured the win for the Giants. After the game, Skattebo criticized the league’s stance on his aggressive playing style:
“I’ll keep that conversation between us,” Skattebo said when asked about the official’s call. “The NFL loves to highlight my style, then penalizes me for it. I’m going to play how I want, even if it means facing fines or penalties. I will continue playing hard for the team.”
The NFL has been focusing on reducing helmet-to-helmet contact, yet Skattebo’s playing approach is reminiscent of traditional running plays. Video footage showed little difference from his previous runs, leading fans to question the call and label it as “soft” and “bizarre” on social media. Despite the unusual nature of penalizing offensive players in these situations, Skattebo acknowledged that a fine might be forthcoming.
Beyond the penalty, Skattebo’s performance in Week 7 was crucial after being benched following an overtime fumble against the Washington Commanders. That mistake prevented a potential victory, resulting in a tie instead.
Harbaugh clarified the decision not to use Skattebo in the previous game:
“It wasn’t intentional for him not to get the ball,” Harbaugh said. “It’s about getting the best out of whoever is in the game at a given moment. We didn’t plan on being down by 24, for sure.”
In response to his earlier fumble issues, Skattebo delivered an impressive performance with 124 rushing yards, a touchdown, and regained his status as a lead back. Although the Giants have a bye week, Skattebo remains committed to his style as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles.
