A Florida mother was surprised after exploring her adoptive daughter’s heritage through DNA testing. Tara Johnson, in her quest to discover more about her 7-year-old daughter Agnas’ background, uncovered an unexpected connection between them.
Tara had always cherished her Sicilian roots. She believed in the power of heritage to nurture a sense of identity and belonging. This belief drove her to explore Agnas’ ancestry. “When Agnas became part of our family, she brought with her an entire history and heritage that existed long before us,” Tara said. She emphasized the importance of celebrating Agnas’ complete story.
Tara and her partner Troy have three other children: Hallie, 13, Theo, 9, and Rowan, 6. The couple had some expectations about Agnas’ ancestry. Her biological mother hinted at a Lebanese grandfather, but there were gaps regarding her biological father’s background.
The DNA results were surprising. A TikTok video shared by Tara (@tarakole) revealed Agnas’ lineage: 24.6% Scottish and Welsh, 23.6% Southern Italian, 19.3% English, and 5.8% Dutch. The Southern Italian connection thrilled Tara. “Being Sicilian has always been a proud part of my identity. Finding Southern Italian roots in Agnas’ results was both fun and unexpected,” she explained.
Tara acknowledged that biology doesn’t define a mother-daughter bond. Yet, the shared ancestry was a special surprise, offering a potential historical connection.
However, the absence of Lebanese ancestry prompted further questions. Tara plans to try another DNA testing service to gain more precise ancestral insights. She recognizes that DNA tests provide estimates rather than exhaustive histories.
Discovering Agnas’ background is vital for Tara’s endeavor to keep her daughter connected to her full story. The family has cultivated strong ties with Agnas’ biological relatives, nurturing an open relationship. Tara expressed, “We want Agnas to grow up knowing she doesn’t have to choose between the people who love her.”
This journey reinforced Tara’s perspective on the distinction between ancestry and family. “DNA can inform us about ancestry, but it doesn’t measure love or belonging,” she stated. Tara pointed out that Agnas’ story expanded rather than started anew when she joined their family.
