Australian law enforcement charged a man on Tuesday following a shocking car ramming attack on independent lawmaker Helen Haines. The incident, which occurred outside her office, left Haines with critical injuries and sparked outrage across the country.
Witnesses reported that Haines, aged 65, was struck twice by the attacker’s vehicle. Initially hit while standing at the rear of her car, the driver then reversed and hit her again. She is currently hospitalized in critical but stable condition, and one of her legs has been amputated according to ABC and CBC news reports.
The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was restrained by a bystander and is now in police custody. He faces multiple charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury to a Commonwealth public official.
“Police will allege the incident was targeted,” stated Victoria police.
Australia’s national police have expressed ongoing concern about the increasing threats against politicians and high-office officials. Over 1,067 such threats were reported in 2025-26 alone.
In a statement, the suspect’s father and stepmother expressed their devastation over the attack, highlighting their long-standing friendship with Haines.
