Key Medicare Changes for 2027: What Beneficiaries Need to Know

Medicare open enrollment has started for 2027, introducing several significant changes to health and prescription drug coverage. Many beneficiaries will face higher Part D cost thresholds and changes in medication pricing. This annual open enrollment period runs from October 15 to December 7, allowing beneficiaries to evaluate their current coverage against other options, such as original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, and prescription drug plans. Decisions made during this period take effect on January 1.

Changes to Medicare Part D in 2027

Key shifts in Part D involve increased costs. The out-of-pocket threshold for Part D will rise to $2,400, up from $2,100 in 2026, requiring beneficiaries with substantial prescription expenses to pay an additional $300. The standard Part D deductible will also increase to $700 from $615. Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, remarked on how this 14% increase could diminish the purchasing power from the 3.6% Social Security COLA, as revealed to Newsweek.

End of Part D Premium Stabilization

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will terminate the Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration at year’s end. Part D insurers now rely on traditional market conditions for setting bids. This change may slightly affect premiums. CMS announced the national base beneficiary premium for 2027 at $41.33, a benchmark for calculating plan-specific premiums, but not a universal charge. However, the Inflation Reduction Act still caps annual base premium increases at 6% through 2029.

Medicare Negotiated Drug Prices

In 2027, Medicare’s Drug Price Negotiation Program will implement negotiated prices for 15 additional drugs. Medications impacted include diabetes and weight management drugs like Ozempic and Rybelsus. Other affected drugs include Trelegy, Ellipta, Xtandi, and several others. Kevin Thompson stated these negotiations could lower beneficiary costs. CMS estimates this could save Medicare beneficiaries about $685 million in 2027.

Medicare Advantage Plan Adjustments

Some changes will affect Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in 2027. Insurers may withdraw plans from certain areas or adjust benefits. There might be a reduction in dental or vision benefits, with potential increases in cost-sharing. Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor, emphasizes the importance of beneficiaries reviewing coverage options carefully before the enrollment deadline to avoid unexpected losses in benefits.

Considerations During Medicare Open Enrollment

Before December 7, beneficiaries should consider more than just monthly premiums. Rising healthcare costs could offset the additional Social Security increase. Key areas to review include changes in your plan’s premium, drug deductibles, copays, and any reduction in supplemental benefits like dental or other perks.

What to Expect Next

The Medicare open enrollment period concludes on December 7, with new coverage effective from January 1. Kevin Thompson notes that although increases in Social Security checks could benefit seniors, healthcare cost increases might negate these. Thus, beneficiaries must carefully evaluate their choices to mitigate any potential financial burdens.
