The New York Knicks achieved a historic victory by winning their first NBA title in 53 years during the last season. They claimed the championship by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. Now, as they step into the 2026-27 NBA season, the Knicks carry the burden of expectations as the league champions.
Analyzing potential threats in the Eastern Conference, NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins identifies the Philadelphia 76ers as the primary contender. The 76ers made significant moves during the offseason, bringing in legendary player LeBron James through free agency. They also acquired Jaylen Brown in a major trade with the Boston Celtics. These additions bolster a strong lineup that already includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
Perkins emphasized, “The 76ers are the team to dethrone the Knicks,” during his appearance on NBA Today’s Tuesday episode on ESPN. Last season, the 76ers advanced to the second round of playoffs after defeating the Celtics. However, their journey ended with a sweep by Jalen Brunson and the Knicks in the subsequent round.
The anticipation grows as the 76ers commence their 2026-27 regular season against the Knicks with a matchup scheduled for Oct. 20.
