The Philadelphia Eagles’ journey to face the Jacksonville Jaguars ended in disappointment. With a narrow one-point lead and only eight seconds left, coach Nick Sirianni’s decision to opt for a standard kickoff rather than a squib kick handed the Jaguars an opportunity they seized, leading to their victory. Former cornerback Asante Samuel criticized Sirianni’s strategy during the “Say What Needs To Be Said” show, blaming him for the 19-17 loss.
“You lost the game for your team,” Samuel expressed, emphasizing the routine nature of a squib kick in such situations.
The Eagles’ frustration was epitomized by Sirianni’s response after the match. “I didn’t make the right decision and I lost us that game,” he admitted. This candid acknowledgment came as the team saw their potential win vanish after a strong comeback led by Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal.
Jalen Hurts, the Eagles’ quarterback, reflected on his own role, noting that game management decisions were beyond his jurisdiction. “It’s not my place… so I’m honoring a play call,” Hurts explained to reporters, while admitting that he had considered whether he should have intervened.
Despite these reflections, Sirianni maintained that Hurts’ responsibilities remain clear. “Jalen’s playing. We’re coaching and calling the plays,” Sirianni noted, reinforcing team roles. Yet, this division of responsibilities doesn’t seem to ease Hurts’ discontent with the handling of crucial moments in the game.
