Tyler Fender and Jake Bruce frequently visit Elgin Lanes for its distinctive wood lanes and relaxed environment. “The lanes were always better than other places,” noted Fender.
Fanny Kwok-Ng acquired Elgin Lanes, located at 401 Shepard Drive, in February 2025. Her family has been renovating the bowling alley over the past year, marking a fresh start.
Manager Jack Wu shared insights into their efforts to transform the atmosphere. “We wanted to change the atmosphere at the bowling alley,” said Wu. Having received positive feedback, Wu expresses gratitude for the venue’s importance to patrons.
The building, initially constructed in 1963, launched as a bowling alley the next year. Following an initial setup with 20 lanes, it expanded to 30 lanes within the same year.
With its history as a family-owned business, Kwok-Ng ventured into a new industry. Having led multiple restaurant ventures, including the Elgin Buffet, she sought to preserve the bowling alley’s legacy. Her son, Wu, relocated from Kansas to assist in the endeavor.
Despite reasonable upkeep by the previous owner, the alley showed signs of decline. Wu pinpointed aging machinery due to extensive use.
Regular patrons, including league participants, were instrumental in keeping Elgin Lanes operational. Kwok-Ng focused on enhancements, such as expanding the arcade and revising promotional strategies. Wu introduced improvements like refurbishing the wood lanes, resisting the urge to switch to synthetic despite costs.
Engaging with the U.S. Bowling Congress, the lanes achieved recertification with the organization’s gold standard. “All the bowlers say it’s like night and day compared to last year,” noted Wu.
Elgin Lanes holds significance among multigenerational bowlers and attracts a younger demographic. With other local alleys shut down or converted by larger companies, Elgin Lanes offers a retro feel without flashy gimmicks.
The Wu family has upgraded the kitchen and diversified the menu. The bar area has undergone renovations with new furnishings and a full bar setup. Enhanced arcade provisions include additional games.
Plans are underway for further developments. Following city approval, a new entrance will lead into the bar, alongside outdoor seating arrangements. Future aspirations include enriching the event area with interactive options and live music.
Celebrations commenced with a ribbon-cutting on October 28, offering complimentary bowling, refreshments, and raffles. Interested parties were encouraged to RSVP via provided contact details.
