A dramatic rescue operation unfolded as the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office deployed a helicopter crew to save a man stranded on his overturned truck amidst rapidly moving floodwaters in Tonopah, Arizona.
The man was discovered sitting atop his vehicle, surrounded by floodwaters. First responders determined that reaching the man directly was too dangerous under the circumstances, opting instead for a hoist rescue.
Video footage shared by authorities captured the moment a member of the Fox 1 crew was lowered toward the vehicle. The rescuer secured the man in a harness and hoisted him to safety. Once onshore, fire personnel were ready to provide assistance.
Helicopter pilot Rich Dickner highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that floodwaters had risen dramatically in a short span. Observations showed the water level climbing from the bottom of the truck’s window to the top.
Deputy Lindsey Smith played a pivotal role, being lowered approximately 80 feet to reach the overturned truck. Despite initial difficulties in securing her footing, she successfully attached herself to the vehicle, ensuring a swift and effective rescue within five minutes.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office praised the crew’s rapid response, emphasizing their expertise in safely bringing the man to shore.
The incident occurred during a period of historic rainfall in the Desert Southwest, brought about by remnants of Hurricane Polo. These weather conditions led to perilous flash flooding across the region.
The Flood Control District of Maricopa County has issued warnings to drivers, advising them not to attempt crossing flooded roads and emphasizing the swift changes that can occur in weather conditions.
