Phillies Force Game 3 with 10th-Inning Victory Over Braves

In Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series, the Philadelphia Phillies secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. The game remained tied at 3-3 until the 10th inning when Alec Bohm’s crucial two-out home run led the Phillies to triumph, setting up a decisive Game 3.

Earlier in the game, the Phillies trailed 3-1. Key players, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to level the score. Harper’s home run was especially meaningful as it came after a fielding mishap that allowed Atlanta to take the lead.

Andrew Painter played a vital role by pitching three scoreless innings, maintaining the Phillies’ lead and enduring pressure situations, including stranding two Braves in the 10th. His efforts highlighted the taxed state of Philadelphia’s bullpen during the game.

The game featured traditional extra-inning rules, without automatic runners on base as seen in the regular season. Bohm’s decisive postseason home run, reaching 357 feet, was against pitcher Didier Fuentes.

Philadelphia has a history of postseason success against the Braves, having defeated them in the 1993 NLCS and the 2022 and 2023 NLDS. This momentum will be crucial as they prepare for Game 3.

During the seventh inning, Drake Baldwin’s double passed Harper’s glove, enabling Sean Murphy to score and give Atlanta a brief lead. Despite being unwelcome, Harper’s fielding error was not officially scored as such.

Atlanta’s Tyler Mahle allowed one run on six hits over seven innings. Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sánchez, on the other hand, gave up three runs across 6.2 innings, with his pitch count reaching a career-high 116.

The decisive Game 3’s start time is under consideration, pending the results of other ongoing Wild Card Series matchups. MLB plans to announce whether it will commence at 2:15 p.m. ET or 8:15 p.m. ET.
