The New York Giants are in a tough spot as they deal with the aftermath of Jaxson Dart’s knee surgery. Dart is out for the regular season, leading the team to consider adding new quarterbacks to their roster.
On Sunday, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston started for the Giants. He led the team to a 12-7 victory against the Tennessee Titans at MetLife Stadium, despite the rainy conditions. Winston completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards and added 14 rushing yards.
While Winston’s performance wasn’t outstanding, it was enough to secure a win against a Titans team struggling under head coach Robert Saleh, who is experiencing a challenging first season with the team now at 0-3.
Giants head coach John Harbaugh stated in a postgame press conference that Winston will continue as the starter, regardless of any new signings. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, Harbaugh expressed that Winston fulfilled the requirements needed to triumph over Tennessee.
Winston, drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, has not excelled in critical passing statistics. However, the Giants remain focused on strengthening the team rather than dwelling on Winston’s performance struggles.
Harbaugh emphasized, “The plans are the plans. The opportunities that you have are the opportunities you have. No matter what, we’re going to do everything we can to make our team as strong as we can based on what options we have.”
The Giants hope Dart could return in January if their playoff dreams extend into the postseason. Presently, they must focus on winning upcoming games to reach the playoffs. With a 2-1 record, the Giants prepare to host the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4.
Despite concerns about Winston’s performance, particularly his struggles in a Monday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Rams where he went 11 of 27 for 111 yards and one interception, the Giants had hoped for improved results against the Titans. Unfortunately, the hoped-for improvements were not evident.
