British Singer Raye Talks Success and Personal Struggles

Singer-songwriter Raye has achieved considerable success with her hit “Where Is My Husband!”, selling 1.2 million copies in the U.K. Despite not having a wedding ring, her song has gained over a billion streams on Spotify. Interestingly, Raye calls it a popular wedding song even though it expresses her single status.

The song is included in her second album, “This Music May Contain Hope”, which has received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone for its ambitious production. Raye prefers a maximalist approach both on stage and in her songwriting process, the latter often beginning in a spontaneous manner. She is currently on a creative hiatus, having poured intense emotions into her last album.

Born Rachel Keen, Raye launched her music career at 14. Despite initial challenges and less-than-ideal vocal skills, her songwriting stood out as uniquely hers. Her lyrical style often involves clever word syncopation.

Her early record deal made her wait for seven years while creating music for others, leading her to realize what she did not want: sharing art she was not proud of. Ultimately, Raye publicly challenged her label, Polydor, and gained her independence. Though costly, this autonomy allows her to invest as she pleases, focusing on quality performances over profit.

“Yes, so much cost, but to me, an amazing reward,” she said.

Raye’s first album, “My 21st Century Blues”, explores difficult personal experiences, including sexual assault. Her coping mechanism included drugs and alcohol, themes she addressed through her music.

Her sister, Amma, was supportive during these troubling times. Raye believes writing about such topics is crucial for her healing process.

Looking ahead, Raye plans a positive shift in her music with her third album, “And Then She Fell In Love”. She promises it will convey warmth and positivity.
