Charles Spencer Reveals Insights into Princess Diana’s Life

Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has launched a new memoir titled “Swan Song.” The book delves into various previously undisclosed aspects of Diana’s life inside the royal family.

Charles’ Reaction to Diana’s Death

In his memoir, Spencer shares his recollection of Diana’s death. On the tragic morning she passed, then-Prince Charles is described as having a reaction Spencer found odd, noting Charles seemed “giddily elated.” He felt Charles’s demeanor was disconnected from the weight of the loss, attributing it to a sense of relief at the opportunity to potentially marry someone he loved.

Spencer recounts a heated exchange over Diana’s funeral arrangements. Charles allegedly accused the Spencer family of lacking a sense of duty, particularly upset about the initial refusal to allow Princes Harry and William to walk behind their mother’s coffin.

The palace stated, “Fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize.”

Diana’s Plans with Dr. Hasnat Khan

Post-divorce, Diana reportedly fell in love with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan. She expressed a wish to relocate to South Africa with him, seeking a new life away from England’s scrutiny. This move, she imagined, would provide a chance at normalcy.

An American Suitor’s Proposal

Spencer mentions an American politician who envisioned Diana becoming the U.S. First Lady. The politician believed that marriage to Diana would secure a presidential victory. Though Diana was intrigued by living in the White House, Spencer suggests the idea was more about irritating the royal family than committing to marriage.

The ‘Panorama’ Interview Saga

Spencer writes about Diana’s notorious “Panorama” interview. Despite being fed false information by reporter Martin Bashir, Diana was hesitant to go through with the interview. A clandestine meeting supposedly convinced her of her “imminent” danger, leading to her eventual participation.

Charles’s Resentments

Spencer recounts a conversation with Charles where the prince lamented inheriting responsibilities late in life. Charles conveyed frustration over treatment more suited to a child, despite his adult roles. A story Diana shared about the Queen contemplating surgery on Charles’s ears is also included, highlighting Charles’s ongoing dissatisfaction.

Diana’s Divorce and Valet Accusation

Upon learning of Diana’s intent to divorce Charles, Spencer recalls her claim that Charles had affection for his valet. Although Spencer doubted the claim, he focused more on Diana’s decision to end her marriage.

Diana’s Interests

Diana had a fondness for traditionally feminine pursuits, enjoying stuffed animals and flowers. She loved music, particularly the Beatles and David Bowie, and was a fan of the soap opera “Crossroads.” Romance novels were among her preferred reads, reflecting her interest in romantic ideals.

Spencer’s memoir comes just before the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. Buckingham Palace offered no additional comments on the memoir’s revelations.
