Former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair has issued a warning about Europe’s position in potential conflicts with Russia. He emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with the United States to ensure victory in such scenarios.
Speaking to Kayleigh McEnany on “Saturday in America,” Blair expressed his concern: “If we get drawn into a conflict without the support of America, we don’t win.” He highlighted the alliance with the U.S. as “an essential relationship.” Blair explained the rationale for supporting President Donald Trump’s request for using British bases, stating that when a crucial ally seeks assistance, it is prudent to offer support.
Blair, who led the U.K. from 1997 to 2007, underscored the significance of the U.S.-U.K. partnership for Western security. With tensions over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential threat to NATO nations, Blair maintains that while he views Putin as a limited threat outside Ukraine, some Europeans perceive a greater risk.
A recent U.S. intelligence report has cautioned about Russia’s potential limited attack on a NATO ally, aiming to fragment the organization. Blair acknowledged the divergent views across Europe regarding Putin’s intentions: “I might be wrong [about Putin]. And there are a lot of people in Europe who think he’s got malicious intent towards NATO countries.”
Blair’s concerns coincide with heightened European alertness towards Russia. A drone equipped with explosives was recently found near a Ukrainian cargo plane in a German airport, raising alarms. Other incidents, including airspace violations and acts of arson, have further signaled potential escalation, according to USA Today.
The U.S. and European nations are jointly working to fortify Ukraine’s defense against Russia while avoiding full-scale involvement in the conflict.
