Week 1 Upsets Spark Debate on NFL Quarterbacks

The Arizona Cardinals delivered a major surprise in Week 1 by defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, who were favored to win. This unexpected outcome prompted discussions about quarterbacks, focusing on Justin Herbert. Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky, now an analyst, faced questions on his preference for quarterbacks like Herbert.

On ESPN 2’s “Unsportsmanlike,” Orlovsky was asked why he favored Herbert over a Super Bowl winner like Jalen Hurts. This query came after Hurts led his team to a 24-22 victory against the Washington Commanders, completing 14 of 25 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown.

“Why do you love quarterbacks who haven’t done it versus those who have?” Orlovsky was asked.

Orlovsky discussed how his early assessment of Hurts was influenced by college performance and doubts about replacing Carson Wentz. Now, he acknowledged Hurts’ accomplishments in the NFL and admitted to having changed his stance. He described Herbert’s performances as what one expects from a top quarterback, although he noted Herbert’s poor showing in the loss to the Cardinals.

Orlovsky had previously expressed his support for Herbert on “The Pat McAfee Show,” where he predicted Herbert would be a top MVP candidate and praised the Chargers’ offensive capabilities. Despite this, Herbert’s Week 1 game saw him complete 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown, alongside an interception. The Cardinals’ Jacoby Brissett led his team with 277 passing yards and a touchdown, totaling 393 yards of offense.

As Week 2 approaches, questions linger about whether Herbert can guide the Chargers effectively in the playoffs. Despite frequent praise, he has yet to secure a postseason win, holding an 0-3 record. The upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders offers a chance for the Chargers to improve upon their opening week’s performance.
