Mayor Johnson Announces Key Administration Changes

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration is seeing shifts with the retirement of Mary Richardson-Lowry, the city’s corporation counsel. Richardson-Lowry, with a tenure exceeding three years, has played a crucial role since the days of Mayor Richard M. Daley. Her successor is Renee Hatcher, a law professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, pending City Council approval.

Johnson commended Richardson-Lowry for her service, emphasizing her role in navigating significant legal challenges. “Mary has been a trusted partner,” Johnson stated. “Her commitment to public service and the people of Chicago has been unwavering.” As Hatcher steps into this role, she brings her experience in building economic power and justice advocacy from her previous committee roles.

Richardson-Lowry’s impact includes spearheading a “global settlement” to address police misconduct lawsuits. This effort is projected to save the city over $400 million. She has also been a pivotal figure in numerous litigations against Trump administration policies and actions, including cases involving federal funding and immigration.

Richardson-Lowry’s extensive career began in the city’s Law Department, followed by roles under Mayor Daley and returning to City Hall with Johnson. Reflecting on her time, she noted, “We strengthened departmental capabilities in risk assessment and litigation management. It’s been a fulfilling journey.” Her departure is among recent administrative changes, including new appointments in various city departments.

These transitions also include Tiheta L. Hinton taking over the Department of Human Resources, JuanPablo Prieto leading the Department of Fleet and Facility Management, Rachel Cohen assuming the role of communications director, and others stepping into pivotal positions following departures.
