Steve Ballmer, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, addressed the public for the first time since his one-year suspension by the NBA. This penalty relates to the Kawhi Leonard scandal. Ballmer acknowledged his responsibility in the matter, stating that he has paid the $30 million fine imposed by the league.
“This has been a challenging period for everyone involved with the Clippers,” Ballmer mentioned on Twitter. “I extend my apologies to our fans, employees, and fellow NBA team owners for the disturbance and distress caused. I take full responsibility as the principal owner.”
On September 2, the NBA disclosed that the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard breached its salary cap circumvention rules. Previously, both parties denied these allegations.
“We are committed to moving forward,” Ballmer’s post added, highlighting compliance with the NBA’s penalties.
Ballmer’s suspension covered all league and team activities for one year. The NBA cited his involvement in securing off-court income opportunities for Leonard and approving a business deal necessary for an endorsement agreement with Aspiration. Ballmer also failed to ensure compliance with NBA’s circumvention rules.
This punishment extended beyond Ballmer. The NBA suspended Gillian Zucker, President of Business Operations, and Lawrence Frank, President of Basketball Operations. Zucker faced a one-year suspension without pay, while Frank’s suspension lasted six months. The Clippers also lost their first-round draft picks from 2029 to 2033.
Despite disputes with the investigation’s findings, Ballmer emphasized focusing on the future. “We aim to support, not distract,” he asserted. The challenge is to rebuild with dedication, emphasizing community investment and fan confidence.
The investigation revealed the connection between Leonard, the Clippers, and Aspiration, exposing attempts to skirt salary cap rules. The findings, coupled with further reports, left Ballmer no option but to accept accountability.
Although he acknowledges mistakes, the penalties will impact the Clippers for years. Ballmer expressed determination to rebuild, assuring fans of the team’s commitment to excel.
