Understanding Chick-fil-A’s Unique Franchise Model

Chick-fil-A is among the most challenging franchises to join in the United States, drawing thousands of applicants each year for a limited number of owner-operator positions. Julian Good, a Chick-fil-A owner in St. Charles, Illinois, recently discussed the franchise model on the “Founder Talk” podcast.

“It’s a $10,000 franchise fee. It’s been the same for the last 50 years,” Good stated.

Each year, approximately 100,000 people apply to become a Chick-fil-A owner-operator, but only about 200 are selected according to Good. The selection process is described by Chick-fil-A as “highly competitive.” The company is looking for leaders who will dedicate their full time and best efforts to running a restaurant, as noted in a January 2024 post on Chick-fil-A’s press room website.

Past experience with Chick-fil-A is not a prerequisite for becoming an owner-operator. More than 25% of the newly chosen operators had never worked at its restaurants or for the company before their application according to Chick-fil-A. Applicants without Chick-fil-A experience may wait three to five years before getting an opportunity.

Operators of Chick-fil-A come from various professional backgrounds including manufacturing, health care, education, law enforcement, and retail. Unlike many other franchise systems, Chick-fil-A owner-operators do not own the restaurant they manage. Franchise Business Review notes that Chick-fil-A maintains ownership of the restaurant, equipment, and often the real estate. This arrangement means operators do not build equity in the business or have the option to sell it upon retirement.

Good highlighted this distinction as a significant difference between Chick-fil-A and many other franchise models. The company also stands out for its operating hours, with all locations closed on Sundays. This weekly tradition is a key part of Chick-fil-A’s culture.

“Just a way to glorify God and give back to the team and the community,” Good remarked.

Fox News Digital contacted Chick-fil-A for comment regarding its business practices.
