A confrontation occurred between campaign staff for Amy Acton, Ohio’s former health director and Democratic contender for governor, and a Republican activist wielding a camera. This incident took place at a campaign event in Harrison, Ohio, last Saturday.
The activist questioned Acton about her repeated refusal to engage in debate with her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy. Her staff quickly intervened to prevent further interaction, leading to criticism from Ramaswamy’s camp.
“Dr. Amy Acton, why do you refuse to debate your opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy?” the interviewer asked.
Acton’s team insisted, “No photos, no videos,” as they shielded her from the camera. In one moment, the cameraman claimed the staff accidentally bumped into him, disrupting his filming.
Ramaswamy had accepted a debate invitation from CNN, but Acton’s campaign declined. A spokesperson stated that Acton preferred focusing on connecting with Ohioans instead of engaging with someone they accused of spreading misinformation and personal attacks.
The points of contention include Acton’s handling of Ohio’s COVID response and various personal disputes brought up by opponents. Additionally, AI-generated ads altered Acton’s car license plate to read “drunk mom,” leading to further controversy.
In response, Ramaswamy questioned Acton’s leadership ability due to her avoidance of direct voter engagement and debate opportunities.
“It’s too bad for Ohio voters that Acton won’t take voter questions, won’t debate, quit after failing as Ohio’s health director, and has some serious issues now surfaced in multiple police reports,” Ramaswamy remarked on social media.
Acton’s team did not respond to requests for comment about the incident. Having secured the Democratic primary, Acton will challenge Ramaswamy in the general election on Nov. 3.
