Gavin Newsom’s Potential Presidential Run and Its Challenges

In South Carolina, Governor Gavin Newsom’s ambitions for the 2028 presidential race are openly acknowledged. “Gavin 2028” buttons are already in circulation, signaling his expected candidacy. His allies, including party leaders and activists, hint at his national aspirations. “The next thing,” as insiders call it, suggests a White House bid.

However, Newsom faces a critical hurdle due to his home state, California. Many see California as a liberal stronghold that sparks controversy. Vera DeVito, a South Carolina Democrat, captured this sentiment. She expressed concerns about Newsom’s potential appeal due to his Californian origins. She noted the regional differences that might hinder his acceptance, especially in the South.

“It’s going to be hard for him to appeal to the whole country,” she said.

Newsom’s possible competitors, like Michigan’s Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro, have potential advantages. They represent battleground states and might better attract moderate voters. Newsom’s team is aware of the challenges labeled “California derangement syndrome.” Yet, his interest in the presidency remains undeterred.

Reflecting on California’s history of failed presidential bids, Newsom openly considers his chances. He suggests an announcement might come soon, indicating preparedness despite historical setbacks.

During his South Carolina tour, Newsom balanced public and private engagements. His message focused on countering Trump and rallying Democratic support. He highlighted alleged Trump misconduct, including financial dealings and election disruption attempts. “Donald Trump is ruthless,” he warned, urging Democrats to resist.

“We’ve got to meet this moment and recognize what we’re up against,” Newsom asserted.

Republican opponents in South Carolina emphasize Newsom’s Californian connection. Protesters used slogans like “Wrong Coast” and challenged his governance style. Despite these criticisms, Newsom remains confident. His national exposure includes debates with notable figures and media appearances.

He acknowledges the dual perception of California as both a liability and an opportunity. Newsom intends to reshape discussions on California’s achievements, which include progressive policies and economic growth.

“In a Democratic primary, in particular — we’ve got the receipts,” Newsom stated, referring to policy successes.

South Carolina residents acknowledged Newsom’s charisma. His celebrity image and engaging demeanor attract attention, though opinions differ. Monty Fetterolf, a local, noted Newsom’s fame as a draw, while others critiqued his style.

“He’s a little slick — not a lot of meat,” said DeVito, reflecting diverse perceptions.
