The Ordeal of Hannah Pettey: A Story of Survival and Justice

Hannah Pettey faced relentless pain in January 2022. For half a year, her condition worsened, leaving her struggling to care for her young children. Her son, Lincoln, was three, and her daughter, Gracie, had just turned two.

With her health deteriorating, Hannah’s husband, Brian Mann, a chiropractor, could not find the cause of her distress. He wanted to refer her to a specialist.

On January 18, Hannah called her mother, Nicole Pettey, urgently requesting a ride to the hospital. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, doctors noted her critical state yet had to discharge her due to stable vitals. However, she suffered a severe seizure at the hospital, revealing she was starving to death.

Doctors found Hannah’s condition peculiar, as her body was filled with lead, not the result of accidental ingestion. With this discovery, the situation escalated to a criminal investigation.

Nicole was seen visiting Hannah frequently.

Doctors and investigators were at a loss for evidence of lead capsules. Led by Lt. Alan McDearmond, the search expanded. Despite Brian agreeing to a home search, nothing tangible was found.

Meanwhile, Hannah’s health improved. Her determination to recover intensified with thoughts of her children. As she grew stronger, so did the suspicion against Brian.

Brian had taken out multiple life insurance policies, which raised further suspicions. The authorities, led by prosecutor Garrick Vickery, proceeded with charges against him based on motive and circumstance.

The trial commenced in June 2025. Despite the defense’s claim of no physical evidence, circumstantial evidence and the discovery of possible lead sources at Brian’s workplace played a pivotal role.

After deliberation, the jury found Brian guilty. Hannah, once near death, emerged resilient, graduating with a teaching degree, while Brian received a life sentence.

Hannah, now in control of her life, focuses on her career and her role as a mother, having reclaimed her home, once shared with Brian.
