Elliot Page Discusses Career Challenges Post-Transition

Transgender actor Elliot Page opened up about changes in his acting career after coming out as transgender in 2020. On the “On Film… with Kevin McCarthy” podcast, Page mentioned that acting offers have decreased following his role in Christopher Nolan’s successful film “The Odyssey.” Page noted that Hollywood may view him differently post-transition, potentially affecting casting opportunities.

Reflecting on his career changes, Page suggested he might need to take proactive steps in creating projects and engaging with filmmakers. “I was seen in a certain way before, and it’s different now,” Page remarked, emphasizing the need for new approaches to his career.

Page humorously attributed the challenge to “The Canadian thing.” Despite “The Odyssey” achieving major box-office success, acting opportunities remain scarce for Page.

Lisa Cusack, president of the Don’t L.A. My Burbank PAC, commented on the influence of broader financial pressures in Hollywood. She argued that studios should focus on producing entertainment audiences desire rather than political messaging. “The industry is struggling now and can’t afford to push politics that lose at the box office,” she stated. Cusack hopes the industry will return to traditional storytelling.

“The Odyssey” faced criticism prior to its release, with some accusing the film of incorporating “woke” politics. This included the casting of Page as Sinon, along with actors like Lupita Nyong’o and Travis Scott in key roles.

Despite the challenges, Page remains determined to continue acting. “I feel like I could maybe do some of my best work now,” he expressed. Page appreciates his past opportunities and is optimistic about future roles.

“The Odyssey” emerged as a significant hit in 2026, grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide. Its success occurred during a tumultuous period for the movie industry. Domestic box-office revenue showed a 15% increase from 2025, although it remained below 2019 levels. Ticket sales were also notably lower than pre-pandemic times.
