Contradictions in Gustavo Gordillo’s Story

Contradictions in Gustavo Gordillo’s Story

Recent developments have raised contradictions surrounding Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America in New York City. His claims of being a ‘union electrician’ and his family’s working-class background have come under scrutiny.

Claims vs. Reality

Gordillo has often highlighted his family’s immigrant success story to support socialism. He stated, “My parents came here, they had nothing. Their first jobs were in fast food and cleaning houses. They built success in this country. And they’re absolutely the exception.” He aims to build a world where success stories like his parents’ are not exceptional.

However, Gordillo’s paternal grandfather, Manuel Gordillo, immigrated from Peru to the United States in 1958 to practice medicine. Manuel established his career as a psychiatrist and president of the Ohio Psychiatric Association. This background raises questions about Gordillo’s portrayal of his parents growing up in poverty.

Gordillo confirmed to Fox News, “My dad’s first job in the United States was at Wendy’s, and my mom’s was a house cleaner. They did make a living and had success.” Despite questions about his claims, Gordillo and the NYC Democratic Socialists of America did not comment when contacted.

Discrepancies Uncovered

Gordillo’s descriptions of his occupation and living arrangements also present contradictions. He claimed to live in a modest apartment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, while records show he resided in a $1.4 million townhouse owned by his father in a more upscale area. NYC Councilwoman Vickie Paladino criticized Gordillo’s living situation, pointing out the DSA’s concern over housing inventory.

The socialist leader identified himself as a ‘union electrician,’ though he is not a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) since March. Gordillo was fired for not attending his apprenticeship, as confirmed by the IBEW in a statement.

Despite the IBEW’s clarification, Gordillo continues to describe himself as a ‘union electrician’ on social media.
