William Jewell College Running Back MichahJo Barnett Dies During Game

MichahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, passed away on Saturday after a medical emergency during the team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri. A spokesperson for the college informed Newsweek that there were no known pre-existing conditions that could have prevented Barnett from playing football.

“The College has no details as to the nature or cause of the medical emergency,” the spokesperson stated.

The institution announced his untimely death on X, expressing condolences to Barnett’s family, teammates, friends, and coaches. A vigil was planned for Saturday night in his honor on the campus.

Barnett’s medical emergency occurred on the sidelines during the first quarter. The game was subsequently suspended and canceled as medical teams attended to him. The exact cause of the emergency remains unknown.

Barnett was a junior studying business administration and had established himself as a key player in William Jewell’s football program. Originally from the Kansas City area, he attended Liberty North High School where he contributed to a state championship win before advancing his athletic and academic pursuits at William Jewell.

Greg Jones, a former college football coach and a member of the Missouri Football Coach Hall of Fame, posted:

“The world lost a great person today! MichahJo was the ultimate human. He always put his teammates before himself and brought out the best in everyone around him. In times like this, we’re reminded just how precious and fragile life truly is. Make sure to take the time and tell the ones around you how much you love them,” he wrote on X.

The Cardinals started the day with promise, as Barnett scored a touchdown before the emergency. Witnesses described a somber atmosphere as players, coaches, and supporters dealt with the tragedy. Although emergency personnel transported him to a local hospital, he was later pronounced dead.

On the field, Barnett became a standout for the Cardinals. During his freshman year, he appeared in eight games and became the team’s leading rusher in the 2025 season, even with injuries limiting his playtime. He achieved 366 yards and four touchdowns, with a notable performance against Kentucky Wesleyan, recording 150 yards and three touchdowns. His academic excellence earned him Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.

William Jewell is scheduled for an away game on September 12 at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
