President Donald Trump has expressed strong disapproval of Canada following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to reject a proposed trade agreement between the U.S. and Canada. Carney also announced a plan for dollar-for-dollar retaliation against new American tariffs.
In his initial remarks since the trade negotiations fell through, Trump took to Truth Social. He stated, “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one.” He accused Canada of imposing substantial tariffs on American farmers for years, declaring, “No more!!!” in an early morning post.
Prime Minister Carney responded to Trump’s new 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. He labeled these measures an economic “attack” on Canada. In response, Carney promised retaliatory tariffs that will start next month.
During his time in office, Trump has frequently used tariffs as a strategic tool, with Canada often being a primary focus. Discussions between Ottawa and Washington came to a halt last Friday. Carney described the last-minute changes in the U.S. proposal as “unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”
The situation continues to develop and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
