Navy leaders are currently discussing the possibility of renaming an aircraft carrier in honor of former President Donald Trump, according to two U.S. officials. The vessel, still under construction, was initially intended to be named the USS Doris Miller. This choice honored an enlisted sailor known for his bravery during World War II.
Doris Miller, a mess attendant, manned an anti-aircraft gun amidst the attack on Pearl Harbor, despite lacking formal training. He is credited with shooting down at least one Japanese aircraft and saving wounded U.S. sailors. Miller made history as the first Black service member to receive the Navy Cross, the Navy’s second-highest award. The image of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz presenting the Navy Cross to Miller aboard the USS Enterprise on May 27, 1942, stands as a testament to his heroism.
The potential renaming of the carrier was reported by CNN. It was noted that the USS Doris Miller would be groundbreaking as the first carrier named after a Black and enlisted sailor. The original decision to name the ship after Miller occurred during President Trump’s first term.
The officials revealed that discussions regarding a name change have been ongoing for several months. The Navy has not provided a response concerning this possible shift.
Additionally, Miller is being considered for the Medal of Honor. Although yet to be approved by the White House, this award is significant because destroyers are frequently named after Medal of Honor recipients, while aircraft carriers are typically named after presidents.
The authority to name ships falls upon the Navy secretary. However, the defense secretary often plays a crucial role in aircraft carrier naming. Thus, such a decision would involve Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao.
This carrier represents the fourth Ford-class vessel in the Navy’s fleet. Notably, it may be one of the first to incorporate a catapult launch system ordered during Trump’s administration, using steam instead of electromagnetic catapults.
