Judge Considers Retrial for Texas Teen Convicted in Stabbing Death

In McKinney, Texas, a judge is set to decide whether Karmelo Anthony will receive a new trial following his conviction for the murder of Austin Metcalf. Anthony, 19, was found guilty of stabbing the 17-year-old at a high school track meet and sentenced to 35 years in prison earlier this summer.

Significantly, a different judge, Michael Chitty, has been assigned to this case. The shift occurred after Judge John Roach, who initially presided, made public comments supporting the jury’s guilty verdict. These comments have become a focal point for Anthony’s defense team as they seek a retrial.

Anthony’s legal representatives argue that the original trial was flawed. They cite issues with courtroom regulations and jury instructions. Additionally, they claim there was a disagreement over focusing on pre-incident events, which influenced Anthony’s decision not to testify.

During the trial, Anthony claimed self-defense during the confrontation with Metcalf. The incident arose when Anthony refused to vacate a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team on a rainy day at the track event. Witnesses stated there was a heated argument leading up to the altercation.

The case gained national attention due to its racial aspects. Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white. Despite this, both legal teams maintained that race was not a factor in the tragedy. Nonetheless, the case led to online harassment of both families as national interest spiked.

On the day in question, multiple schools were participating in the track event. Witnesses testified that Metcalf and others requested Anthony to leave the tent several times, escalating tensions. The prosecution argued that Anthony provoked Metcalf, and witnesses described Anthony as the aggressor.

During the altercation, Anthony allegedly reached into a bag and warned, “Touch me and see what happens.” Following this, Metcalf reportedly pushed him, leading Anthony to stab Metcalf in the chest, as per police reports.
