Researchers have long understood that regular physical activity helps lower dementia risk. A new study highlights the importance of where and how this activity is undertaken. The research, combining analysis from over 4.2 million people, indicates that leisure-time exercise significantly reduces dementia risk. Conversely, work-related physical activity may increase it.
Study Findings
The study, published in The Lancet Public Health, investigated the ‘physical activity paradox’ related to dementia. This paradox, familiar in cardiovascular studies, suggests occupational exercise might not confer health benefits like leisure exercise does. Researchers led by David Raichlen at USC revealed that leisure activities such as walking and swimming reduced dementia risk by 24%. Occupational activity was tied to a 20% increased risk.
“Occupational physical activity often involves spending time in environments that may be less favorable to health, including greater exposure to air pollution and psychosocial stressors,” said Natan Feter, the study’s first author.
The analysis incorporated findings from 74 studies spanning 30 countries, focusing on adults aged 45 to 93. Participants were monitored over a median period of 10 years for dementia diagnoses.
Differences in Activity Types
Researchers found that not all physical activity impacts health equivalently. Manual jobs might involve repetitive tasks and exposure to harmful conditions like pollution. These roles typically offer fewer recreational exercise opportunities due to fatigue and lack of safe spaces.
Leisure activities are often self-chosen, leading to more variation and social engagement. However, the study acknowledges that multiple factors contribute to dementia risk, requiring further investigation into these complex social determinants.
Further Research and Public Health Implications
The study notes a lack of comprehensive data on household activities or active commuting due to reliance on self-reported data, often subject to biases. While consistent findings support the need for attention, the study calls for caution in definitive claims.
Raichlen and Feter’s separate study in Alzheimer’s & Dementia linked mentally active sedentary behavior with better brain function compared to passive activities. Collectively, these insights suggest context is key in public health approaches to dementia prevention.
“Improving access to safe parks and recreational facilities, ensuring leisure time, and reducing harmful workplace exposures might be vital,” Raichlen explained.
