As Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia become more prevalent, many seek ways to protect their brain health with age. Neurophysiologist Louisa Nicola, known for her mission to combat Alzheimer’s, highlighted a beneficial physical exercise on a podcast. Her recommendation: the deadlift.
According to Nicola, the deadlift engages almost the entire body. It involves muscles such as the erector spinae, glutes, quadriceps, serratus anterior, and calves. This comprehensive muscle engagement mirrors that of a barbell squat. She emphasized the mental challenge of lifting heavier weights, arguing that heavier lifting requires more neural resources, enhancing brain activity.
Dementia Concerns and Physical Activity
Dementia, with Alzheimer’s as the leading cause, significantly impacts memory, thinking, and daily functions. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. As researchers search for treatments, physical activity stands out as a vital modifiable lifestyle factor for reducing dementia risk.
Physicians interviewed by Newsweek acknowledged the benefits of the deadlift but cautioned against relying solely on one exercise to prevent Alzheimer’s. They highlighted diverse exercises for overall cognitive health.
Nuanced Perspectives on Exercise and Brain Benefits
Dr. Joanna Fong-Isariyawongse, a neurologist, explained that various exercises support different brain health aspects. Resistance training aids cognition, aerobic activities benefit memory, and balance exercises like tai chi help older adults.
Dr. Sergio Guiteau pointed out the absence of direct evidence linking heavy lifting to neuroprotection or reduced dementia rates. Instead, he recommended a blend of activities that challenge balance, coordination, and learning.
Dr. Parth Bhavsar emphasized the importance of factors like consistency, technique, and cardiovascular fitness for brain health. He encouraged safe and consistent exercise as the best approach.
Alternative Exercises and Consistency
The experts advised that heavy deadlifts are not necessary for brain benefits. Alternatives like machine weights, resistance bands, walking, and tai chi offer similar advantages with a lower injury risk.
Dr. Mariam Zakhary and others highlighted suitable alternatives such as trap-bar deadlifts, kettlebell deadlifts, goblet squats, and resistance-band rows. These exercises offer functional benefits and are adaptable for those with mobility issues.
Consistency emerged as a critical factor. Physical inactivity is linked to dementia risk, per the 2024 Lancet commission. Regular physical activity is recommended by both the CDC and WHO to reduce cognitive decline risk.
Fong-Isariyawongse also noted that activities beyond exercise can enhance brain health, including learning new skills or languages.
Ultimately, while the deadlift is a valuable exercise, a comprehensive approach involving various activities provides the strongest evidence for brain health.
