At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, the spotlight is shining on electric vehicles, yet hydrogen energy is also gaining attention. Hyundai has emphasized its commitment to hydrogen energy. The South Korean automaker is not only producing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but it also aims to foster a ‘hydrogen society’ by advancing energy production, storage, and transportation technologies.
José Muñoz, President and COO of Hyundai Motor Co., expressed confidence in the economic viability of hydrogen energy on Monday.
Similarly, Bosch Mobility plans to launch its first hydrogen combustion engine this year. The company views this as a crucial move toward decreasing global carbon emissions.
The U.S. government’s investment of $7 billion in hydrogen infrastructure has encouraged these developments from Hyundai and Bosch.
Electric Vehicles: Innovative Concepts and Technology
Honda introduced two concept electric vehicles, the ‘Saloon’ and ‘Space-Hub’. The Japanese automaker focuses on a ‘thin, light and wise’ approach, minimizing battery size and weight in these models.
Kia showcased a trio of electric vans designed for easy conversion from cargo transport to taxis. Production in South Korea is slated to begin in 2025.
VinFast, a Vietnamese company, presented an electric truck concept known as the VF Wild at the event.
Improvements in In-Car Technology
Mercedes-Benz updated its infotainment system with an AI-powered virtual assistant, enhancing the interaction between drivers and their vehicles. This technology integrates with automated driving, seating, data displays, and charging functions.
While some manufacturers enhance their own ecosystems, others are partnering with Google. Nissan, Ford’s Lincoln brand, and more will feature pre-installed Google Maps and Assistant, with Porsche joining in 2025. Mercedes-Benz is also incorporating Google apps into its systems.
Solid-State Battery Developments
Honda detailed plans for solid-state batteries, highlighting advancements beyond its Zero Series. According to Executive VP Shinji Aoyama, Honda aims to implement these batteries in the Zero Series by the late 2020s.
Solid-state batteries offer higher energy density, potentially leading to smaller, more powerful batteries. This advancement may result in lighter electric vehicles with improved fuel efficiency, as explained by Honda’s Mitsuru Kariya.
Toyota is also pursuing solid-state battery technology through a collaboration with Japanese oil company Idemitsu.
