Scott Spiezio had been experiencing back pain when he underwent an MRI in 2018, expecting routine results. However, upon exiting the MRI, he discovered he had jaundice, indicating severe liver failure due to prolonged alcoholism. At 47, doctors gave him a 20% chance of survival.
Spiezio’s struggle against alcohol addiction was daunting. He was told he needed to quit drinking for six months to qualify for a liver transplant that could save his life. He doubted his ability to abstain.
His journey into baseball began with strong family roots. His father, Ed, was a two-time World Series champion, and Scott’s mother, Verna, believed he was destined for the field. As a child, he practiced tirelessly in their home basement, his father challenging him with intense situational drills.
After achieving significant success, including a clutch home run in the 2002 World Series with the Angels, Spiezio faced an ego crisis. For him, ‘ego’ stood for ‘edging God out.’ He began to distance himself from faith and got caught up in the praise following his triumphs.
Despite professional success, his personal struggles intensified after a back injury with the Seattle Mariners. It marked the start of his battles with addiction. Plagued by depression and anxiety, he turned to alcohol and drugs.
Spiezio’s relationship with his family suffered. An altercation with his father led to a rift, and he struggled with substance abuse, affecting his career and personal life. His addiction saw him in and out of rehabilitation numerous times.
After multiple failed attempts at sobriety, he underwent a transformative experience in 2018. After a health scare, he decided to rely on faith to overcome addiction. To his amazement, he no longer craved alcohol after praying for help.
His newfound sobriety rekindled his spirituality and relationships, particularly with his father and children. Spiezio began giving back to the community, sharing his journey to help others struggling with similar issues.
Now, Spiezio finds joy in mentoring young athletes and spreading awareness about addiction and faith. He emphasizes that finding hope is possible, regardless of past mistakes. As he rebuilt his life, he discovered fulfillment beyond material wealth.
Spiezio released a memoir, ‘The Hardest Comeback,’ in which he details the arduous path to recovery. He also participates in a documentary that chronicles his struggles and resurgence.
He hopes to inspire those battling addiction, showing that change is achievable through determination and support.
