A drone carrying explosives entered Bulgaria from Romania and detonated near an international gas pipeline on Saturday. This incident increased surveillance measures along the border between these two NATO countries.
Details of the Explosion
The explosion occurred shortly after 5 a.m., approximately 330 feet inside Bulgarian territory, according to Prime Minister Rumen Radev. It happened in a sunflower field near the village of Kardam, close to Romanian and Bulgarian compressor stations on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. Fortunately, there were no casualties or damage to the infrastructure.
Authorities quickly secured the area and initiated an investigation into the event. The pipeline, a crucial connection between Turkey and Ukraine, was not damaged.
Possible Drone Origins
Initially, the origin of the drone and any links to Russia or Ukraine were unclear. Later, Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry indicated that the wreckage was likely from a Maya decoy drone, commonly used by Ukrainian forces.
“At this time, there is no reason to believe that the incident was intentional,” the ministry stated.
Neither Romania nor Bulgaria detected the drone before the explosion. Romania’s Defense Ministry reported that its radar systems did not register any aerial targets moving from Romanian airspace toward Bulgaria.
Bulgaria’s Response and NATO Involvement
Prime Minister Radev announced plans to enhance surveillance and deploy anti-drone technology along the Romanian border. Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov mentioned raising the incident at an upcoming NATO North Atlantic Council meeting.
Stoyanov noted that the drone seemed to carry significant explosives, creating black smoke. This type of drone can be hard to detect due to its small size and low flight path.
Importance of the Trans-Balkan Pipeline
This pipeline connects Turkey and Ukraine through Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. It can transport gas both ways, serving as a supply route for Ukraine and Eastern Europe. The explosion occurred near the Negru Vodă-Kardam interconnection, integral to the transmission systems of Bulgaria and Romania.
The route is gaining importance for energy diversification in the region and to provide Ukraine with access to gas from Southern Europe. This includes liquefied natural gas brought through Greece.
The pipeline’s strategic significance has increased as regional operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine offer capacity for northward deliveries to Ukraine.
Recent Attacks in Ukraine
In a related event, Russia launched six ballistic missiles and over 150 drones at Ukraine, resulting in four deaths in Kyiv and nearby areas. Ukrainian defenses intercepted 135 drones, but some missiles struck their targets.
The casualties included a young child and his grandparents in Brovary district, as well as another person in Kyiv. This attack has renewed concerns over the supply of Patriot interceptor missiles, essential for Ukraine against Russian ballistic weapons.
President Volodymyr Zelensky urged for more international support and stricter sanctions on Moscow. He also requested assistance in domestic production of interceptors.
Meanwhile, Ukraine conducted long-range drone assaults on Russian oil refineries in Krasnodar and Samara. Kyiv argues these facilities support Moscow’s war efforts.
